SCHOOL ADVANCEMENT PROGRAM

LEVEL ONE: PLANNING STAGE

A 4-H Wildlife Stewards Member School must earn AT LEAST 150 points out of a possible 185. Requirements with a "*" indicate that this is a mandatory requirement.

EXPECTED TIME TO COMPLETE LEVEL ONE: One-Two Years

SITE PREPARATION (45 points)

  • Locate a site for your habitat project (5 points)
  • Students map school grounds (10 points)
  • Students gather baseline data of current wildlife activity (10 points)
  • Students research the history of the site to determine what wildlife and native plants may have existed there before the school (10 points)
  • Teachers use the habitat site to conduct lessons in science, art, math, English or social studies (10 points)

PLANNING (20 points)

  • Plan habitat enhancement with an environmentally sound approach (5 points)
  • Get school district and principal approval (5 points)
  • Establish Program Goals for Vision for a one, three, and five years (10 points)

ESTABLISH A HABITAT TEAM (50 points)

  • Identify a Project Coordinator for the project (5 points)
  • Recruit at least four members to form a School 4-H Wildlife Habitat team. Members may include parents, teachers, principal, community partners, OSU Master Gardener etc. (5 points)
  • At least one volunteer completes the 4-H Wildlife Stewards training course (10 points)*
  • Recruit at least one 4-H Junior Wildlife Steward to serve on team (5 points)
  • Schedule a site visit with a 4-H Wildlife Steward Staff (5 points)*
  • Set up a system of communication with the habitat team (10 points)
  • Invite 4-H Wildlife Stewards staff to give a presentation to your PTA, your student body or faculty to encourage their participation and explain the program (10 points)

RECORD KEEPING (40 points)

  • Set up and maintain project journal/historical record in main office for grounds and custodial staff (10 points)
  • Take "before" pictures of your habitat site (5 points)
  • Submit at least 50 hours of volunteer service to the 4-H office (10 points)*
  • Complete 4-H Wildlife Stewards Application, in-school enrollment, and contract (10 points)*
  • Complete a 4-H Wildlife Stewards Level One Advancement Program Application (5 points)*

CELEBRATE SUCCESS (10 points)

  • Plan and organize a kick-off celebration of your wildlife habitat site (10 points)

ESTABLISH FUNDING (15 points)

  • Develop a five-year budget for your project (10 points)
  • Identify three funding sources for your project (5 points)
