GARDEN PONDS

Garden ponds are a great way to attract many different species to your educational garden. Ponds do require maintenance and the initial work that goes into making the pond can be extensive. Be sure if you are using tap water for this project that you let it stand for a week so that the chlorine has time to settle. Many things must be considered before putting in a pond. Safety is very important. Be sure to also check with your school district to find out the district guidelines for creating school ponds. These ponds will attract wildlife even in the most urban areas. They are great teaching tools. You can add fish species or amphibians to add diversity. Be sure to protect the fish at night by using netting to keep out neighborhood predators.
