A big THANK YOU to 4-H Wildlife Steward, Pat Butt and Laura Brown AND Susan's son, Kyle, for helping us paint our new office. Everyone who stops by loves the color! Please stop by and check it out! Speaking of "check it out", we have put a lot of time into organizing our materials and making our resources more easily available to you. You can easily look at the contents of our education kits and our library is well organized. We look forward to seeing you! Hold this dates now! The Student Summit is a day long event filled with excitement and fun for all the students. The program is designed to give students the opportunity to work in teams to prepare and present a poster display and oral presentation about their school habitat project. 4-H Judges provide feedback and awards to the teams. This year a new component of the program is student journal judging. Students will have the opportunity to submit their student journal to a panel of judges who will evaluate the journals for awards. Local 4-H Extension offices can provide information on how to work with students to prepare an oral presentation or poster display. Or contact the 4-H Wildlife Stewards office for more information. This is a great opportunity for students. The past enthusiasm of the students and the pride that they take in sharing their habitat projects has certainly been a statement about the impact of the program on students. Don't miss it! Click on for: Summit Flyer Ferndale Elementary SchoolContributed by Bob Chicken, 4-H Wildlife Steward Students worked this past spring in placing two pieces of large woody debris in the creek and one in the pond. One of the sixth grade science club members located the spots and directed other students in moving the birch logs donated by the city. Two pieces will be placed this fall. Additional stream bank was prepared for grass seeding and was successfully germinated. Other highlights of the spring included working on a site to install a stream flow measuring station, building the flow box, vegetation management, a visit from Lynn Tompkins and her raptor friends, spirited four square games and a HORSE basketball contest won by a third grader. Congratulations Bob – You are doing an outstanding job! Atkinson ElementaryThe Outdoor Learning Gardens (OLG) project at Atkinson Elementary School in Portland, Oregon was founded in Spring 2001 by two Atkinson parents. From our initial garden, a native plant wildlife habitat, we have expanded to include a multicultural garden, an outdoor classroom, butterfly garden, playground tree plantings, a bioswale, and a planned Lewis & Clark garden.
